Picture of David

The Glove Theatre and Alyssa Rizzo in conjunction with Trust Your Gut Productions are producing a staged workshop reading of Picture of David, a new musical based on the Oscar Wilde novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Picture of David is a modern-day adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray, and tells the story of David, a country boy with a Christian background, who comes to study at the University of London.  He is innocent, naïve, enthusiastic, and musical.  Pride and vanity get the best of him and he wishes to remain young and handsome forever.  His wish is granted when he trades places with the man in his picture.  David remains the same, while his picture becomes more corrupted over time.  Eventually, he is forced to face the truth about himself to redeem his soul.  But can he?

Picture of David features a pastiche score by composer, Alyssa Rizzo, ranging from pop/rock to light classical.

We are seeking talented and dedicated musical theatre performers, dancers, and musicians to fill out the cast of this new musical.  Experience with new works, ability to learn and adapt to new and edited material quickly, and dance experience (especially tap) are preferred, but not necessary.

Picture of David: A New Musical
Book, Music, and Lyrics by Alyssa Rizzo
Directed by Michael Maricondi

SEEKING:

DAVID: (Lead, Male. 20’s-30’s, Tenor)  The main character of the story, David is a country boy with a Christian background who comes to study at the University of London.  He is innocent, naive, enthusiastic, and musical.  Pride and vanity, however, get the best of him, and he wishes to remain young and handsome forever.  His wish is granted when he trades places with the man in his picture. David remains the same, while his picture becomes more corrupted over time.  Eventually, he is forced to face the truth about himself and redeem his soul.  Think Orpheus from Hadestown mixed with Andy Biersack from the band Black Veil Brides.  Ability to play the guitar is highly desirable.

PATRICK: (Lead, Male, 20’s-30’s, Tenor)  David’s best friend and roommate at the University, Patrick loves to have a good time.  Originally from Ireland, Patrick is studying photography at the University. He uses David as the subject for one of his projects.  Patrick is fun-loving and shows David how to enjoy the party scene in London.

PAUL: (Lead, Male, 20’s-30’s, Tenor) Another one of David’s friends, a Psychology major at the University, Paul is super cool with natural swag. Originally from the Bronx, Paul is the “bad boy” in the group, with a dark past and a daughter living in the United States.  He is finding shady ways to earn money for child support while taking courses online at the University.  He also loves the life of the party and encourages David to relax his strict moral convictions and pursue pleasure.  Think Channing Tatum from Step Up Part I.

SARAH: (Lead, Female, 20’s-30’s. Mezzo-Soprano/Belter) David’s first girlfriend, she is the lead singer in her brother’s rock band.  Beautiful, fragile, yet powerful when performing onstage, Sarah secretly struggles with BPD. She is also a deeply spiritual person, and her father is a Pastor at a church outside of London. She is the female protagonist in the story.  Think Bella Swan from Twilight combined with Rose from Titanic.

BENJAMIN: (Featured Ensemble, Male, 20’s-30’s, Tenor) Sarah’s over-protective brother and rock guitarist, with a volatile temper and rage to burn.  Actor will also play multiple roles including: Townsperson, University Student, Party Guest.

RACHAEL: (Featured Ensemble, Female, 20’s, Mezzo Soprano) David’s second girlfriend.  She is intelligent, dynamic, strong, and perceptive. She turns out to be Paul’s daughter.  Rachael is an animal rights activist and an undercover detective.  She is assigned to solve the mystery of Patrick’s death.  She is also intrigued by David and determined to find out his secret.  Think Dr. Quinzel before she became Harley Quinn, or Anne Hathaway as Cat Woman. To also play Townsperson, University Student, Bar Crowd, Party Guest.

ENSEMBLE: (Any Gender, Any Age, Any Voice Type) To portray the rest of the world, including the Fortune Teller, Police, Reporters, and more.
